茅葺き写真展ー地域に眠る記憶のカケラー
「きっかけは、1枚の写真から。」

あるお家に古い茅葺き屋根の写真が1枚、飾ってありました。
そこは今は瓦屋根の立派なお家。
きっとこの古写真が無ければ想像することもできなかった、茅葺き屋根が身近にあった頃の景色と生活が思い起こされました。

「昔よく箱木千年家をみに行った。大きな藁葺きの屋根は圧巻だった。」
「よそがトタン被せても、俺の目の黒いうちは、茅葺きにしといてくれ」
地域の人から茅葺き屋根への想いを聞いてまわった時の言葉を思い出しました。
自分の家に茅葺き屋根を残すとき、トタンを被せるとき、いつもそこに住む人の強い想いがあるように思います。
きっとこの屋根にも、あの屋根にも、たくさんの想いや記憶が眠っているんだろうな。

古写真は、失われてしまった記憶のカケラ。
そのカケラは地域に眠る大切なものを、今の人たちに見せてくれるのではないでしょうか。

日本最古の茅葺き民家、箱木千年家にて
山田地域から集めた茅葺きの写真や、茅葺きへの想いを集め、展示します。
茅葺き屋根にこめられた人々の気持ちや、そこにあった生活に想いを馳せる。
そんなきっかけになれば幸いです。

※初日のみ開催時間が10:00~15:00となります。
※平日は開催しておりませんので、お気をつけください。

【Thatched roof photo exhibition -Fragments of memories that lie dormant in the region-】
”It all started with a single photo.”

There was a photo of an old thatched roof on display at a certain house.
It is now a fine house with a tiled roof.
Without this old photo, I would have never been able to imagine the landscape and life of a time when thatched roofs were so close to me.

“”I used to go to see Hakogi Sennen-ya a lot. The big thatched roof was a masterpiece.””
“”Even if other places cover it with tin, please keep it thatched as long as I’m alive.””
I remembered what the locals said when I went around asking them about their thoughts on thatched roofs.
When I leave a thatched roof on my house or cover it with corrugated iron, I think the people who live there always have strong feelings.
I’m sure there are many thoughts and memories sleeping on that roof.

Old photographs are fragments of lost memories.
I believe these fragments can show people today the important things that lie hidden in the region.

At Hakogi Sennen-ya, Japan’s oldest thatched roof house, we will be exhibiting photographs of thatched roofs and thoughts about thatched roofs collected from the Yamada region.
We hope that this exhibition will encourage visitors to think about the feelings of the people who lived there and the lives they put into those thatched roofs.
